Barry L. Kennedy, CAE, IOM
Barry L. Kennedy, CAE,IOM, is currently President of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry and has been with the Chamber since January of 1987. In 1992, he was designated a CAE (Certified Association Executive) by the American Society of Association Executives. The CAE is the professional standard among associations that can be earned by a combination of experience, course study, and the passing of a comprehensive test on all aspects of association management.
Duties at the Nebraska Chamber include serving as the chief executive officer, preparing the budget, representing the Chamber at various meetings, numerous speaking engagements, and serving as one of the registered lobbyists. Since joining the Chamber, the operating budget has more than tripled and membership has grown to an all time high. Barry also serves as a consultant to State Chamber endorsed candidates for legislative offices. In 2013, Barry is serving as Chairman of the Council of State Chambers.
Barry was recently named Ambassador Plenipotentiary by the Nebraska Diplomats Association, their highest award.
Prior to his work with the State Chamber, Barry worked as a political consultant managing several successful statewide campaigns. He also spent 10 years as a livestock buyer for major meat packers and had his own farming operation.
Mr. Kennedy's Junior Chamber of Commerce career includes serving as charter President of the Syracuse NE. Jaycees, State President of the Nebraska Jaycees, National President of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce, and International President of JCI. Major accomplishments include leading the U.S. Jaycees to their highest membership ever, a record that still stands today. Barry's Jaycee involvement is the primary reason that he has visited all 50 states and 66 foreign countries.
A Vietnam Veteran, Barry served through the Tet Offensive of 1968 and received several commendations as a squad leader. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, and was an all state Post Commander for VFW.
Married to Diane, the Kennedy's have two children and five grandchildren. Jason is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and is currently Treasure for the University of Nebraska Foundation. Christy is a graduate of Hastings College and now lives in California where she teaches music and is a fitness consultant.
The Nebraska Jaycee Family of the Year Award is named for the Kennedys.
Hobbies include traveling, reading, golf, tennis, spectator sports, and any family related activity.
