To help keep chamber members even better informed on issues before the Nebraska Legislature, we are hosting a new event – called “An Evening with Legislative Leadership” – featuring the Unicameral’s top leaders.

The event will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018, at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln, located at 1040 P Street.  A reception will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner following at 7 p.m.

Joining us will be:

·   Speaker of the Legislature Jim Scheer (Norfolk):  Elected to the Legislature in 2012 – and re-elected 2016 – Senator Scheer was selected by his colleagues as speaker of the Nebraska Legislature last year.  Prior to serving as speaker, he chaired the Legislature’s Education Committee.  He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  An insurance agent and small business owner, Speaker Scheer is also a former Norfolk Mayor, as well as a former member of the State Board of Education.

·   Chairman of the Revenue Committee Jim Smith (Papillion):  Elected to the Legislature in 2010 – and re-elected 2014 – Senator Smith serves as the leader of the powerful Revenue Committee, which determines the state’s tax policy.  Prior to becoming Revenue Committee chairman, he chaired the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee.   A former OPPD manager and a current small business owner, he is a graduate of University of West Florida and Creighton University, where he received his MBA.

·   Chairman of the Appropriations Committee John Stinner (Gering):  Elected to the Legislature in 2014, Senator Stinner serves as the leader of the powerful Appropriations Committee, which determines the state’s budget and spending priorities.  A graduate of the University of Nebraska for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Senator Stinner is a retired banker and CPA.  He is also a member of the 1970 and 1971 Nebraska Cornhusker National Championship football teams.

We will also be joined by Paul Connors, Canadian Consul General, who will address key business issues affecting both the United States and Canada.

This is your opportunity to hear directly from and engage with the Legislature’s top leaders in the midst of a session that could bring decisions on major proposals affecting Nebraska’s taxes, workforce development, labor laws and economic development initiatives.
